How to Request an Email or LinkedIn Introduction

I am happy to make introductions for trusted contacts. Here is short guidance on how to best request an introduction. I hope this guide helps not only my connections, but others make easy introductions!

I believe the person you are looking to connect to needs to ‘opt-in’. Before I connect you I will send them a note, asking if they want to be connected. Once they say yes. I will make the introduction.

If you are requesting an introduction please send me a note like the one below:

Hey Sergio,

{Personal note/comment}. Would you mind introducing me to {person’s name} (full LinkedIn url e.g. www.linkedin.com/in/person, for person to reach out to)?

I wrote a draft message below you can cut and paste to them for ease of introduction.

Thank you!

Draft message:

{person’s name} (full LinkedIn url e.g. www.linkedin.com/in/person, for person to reach out to)

Hello {name of person you want to connect to},

Can I introduce you to {YOUR NAME}? (YOUR LinkedIn link; full url e.g. www.xyz.com. S/He is interested in speaking with you about X {e.g. a job posting at Apple}. Can I make an introduction?

Best,

Sergio

Once you send me that note I will forward to the sender. Once they respond I will email something like this.

Hello {their name} & {your name},

I am following up to connect you both in regards to the message below. I will let you two take it from here.

Best,

Sergio

If you send a request and I don’t respond, they probably have not followed up. You can follow up with me and I can send a reminder. If you follow up with me twice and they have not responded, I will assume they are busy. I also, from time to time, depending on how well I know the contact or how often someone requests to speak to my contact, I decline to make an introduction. Please do not take this personally. I try my best to manage my personal relationships with care and not overwhelm my professional network and friends.

Happy connecting! Remember — most strangers are friends you have not met yet! ;)

Best,

Sergio
